Post Quarantine Pickup - Cooking Challenge

If there’s one thing the Chinese aren’t given enough credit for, it’s their food. Many of us arrive in China to discover that much of what we find on takeout menus at home couldn’t be further from the real deal – and it’s always a pleasant surprise. But how many Chinese dishes can you make (let alone name)?

Perhaps you’re using this period to broaden your cooking skills. Or maybe you’re simply looking for something to keep you entertained. Whatever it is, we’re challenging you to put your skills to the test in the first cooking round of our Post Quarantine Pickup Challenge.

What follows is a recipe for a simple, yet delicious dish you can make no matter where you are. Simply follow the steps below, upload a photo of the finished product onto Facebook or Instagram, and tag us @HutongSchool along with the hashtag #postquarantinepickup to enter.

400g cabbage (400g
1 tbsp cooking oil (1

3-5 dried chili peppers (3-5

3-5 cloves of garlic (3-5

Pinch of salt (适量盐)

1 tsp light soy sauce (1

1 tsp vinegar (1

Note: If you’ve ever tried cooking Chinese food before, you probably know that exact measures don’t really exist. So, all of the above measurements can be adjusted according to taste.

Method (步骤):
1. Cut the cabbage in half, remove the core, and tear the leaves into small pieces

2. Roughly chop the garlic, green onion, and chili peppers

3. Preheat a wok and add a splash of cooking oil. Heat before adding the garlic, green onion, and dried chili peppers. Stir-fry for 5-10 sec until aromatic.

4. Throw in the hand-torn cabbage and fry over high heat until the leaves become translucent

5. Add the light soy sauce, salt, and vinegar and stir until the cabbage is covered

6. Serve and enjoy with whatever other dishes you have made

Note: the above recipe is suitable for vegetarians. If you wish to add meat, we recommend frying off some pork in the pan before beginning the steps above.
